When the gym is packed, just remember...

In the next few days, gyms will be packed. People will say things and post memes like "New year, new me bullshit" #eyeroll

I have absolutely said these things in the past. I've been annoyed when the 6 people at the gym in the morning became 60. And it's not fair. There is nothing wrong with wanting a fresh start. At some point or another, everyone has tried a resolution and probably not reached it. Thousands of people are going to make "losing weight" their resolution for 2018.

Some will go to the gym for a week and never go back. Some will buy $500 worth of new sneakers, protein powder, tank tops, and fitbits, and never put it to good use.

But...

Some of them are going to make their goal weight in 2018. Some are going to run their first 5k. Or 10k. Or half marathon. Some are going to wear a bathing suit for the first time in years. Some will feel proud of themselves this year. Some will lose pant sizes and stress and anxiety and baggage. Some will lose feelings of doubt. They will gain self worth.

So please remember when you're annoyed that some "fatty" is stealing your treadmill, remember when and where you started. Remember she deserves to be healthy too. And remember you may not recognize her next January 1st.

If you are reading this and feeling scared to take that first step tomorrow, just know that the only person you have to show up for is YOU. You do not have to compete with or impress anyone. No skinny gal at the gym with the perfect sports bra and abs can take away your right to feel endorphins.

Happy New Year. I hope we can all share in feeling welcomed and confident wherever we spend our time.

  2. Exercise can decrease you risk of heart disease, increase your energy levels, improve your mood and self confidence, improve your memory, help you sleep better, and slow down the aging process. And yet most of us still find plenty of excuses to not exercise can everyone do the splits
